Surfin' the Highway hardcover update
Posted by Jake April 29, 2008

It's been a while now since we first started taking orders for the limited edition hardcover of Sam & Max Surfin' the Highway*, and I'm sure many of you are wondering what's going on. Truthfully, for a while there, the answer to that would have been "not a whole lot." After some (assuredly hilarious) hijinks, however, things are now moving forward at a freakishly rapid rate.

The entirety of the hardcover is off at the printers, being pored over like some newly unearthed holy text -- by a group of pressmen whose knowledge of how ink, paper, and glue work would probably kill you -- to make sure that we put it together right. And, as you can see pictured above, Steve Purcell has been diligently signing and numbering all 2,500 book plates to be slapped (very delicately) onto the first page of each hardcover. (He said he could go through about 500 in the span of a 2-hour film. A fun weekend in, for sure.)

Stay tuned for some more details (like, what the finished product will look like!**) in the coming week or so, as everyone signs off on the book and printing begins. Once everything is approved and we can see some guy actually carrying it over to the printing press, we'll let you know that it's time to start watching your mailbox.

* We've still got 'em in stock, too. Do it!
** Hint: It will look awesome.

I love the bookplate. Might just make me buy the damned thing, despite having already bought two copies of the softcover. (one for me, one to pass around friends)

B*stard! If I had known about this I would have waited and not bought the soft cover in Forbidden Plant! But I was weak and needed it then! NOW I'M TOO POOR! WAAAH

I hope I get #1!

Wow! Only 2500? I'm glad I pre-ordereed then.

Really? Considering we're never, ever going to print any more, it seems limited to me. :P

Seeing that the US population is around 304,000,000 alone, and (correct me if I'm wrong) Telltale will ship to other countries, 2500 is pretty limited.

Looks awesome, can't wait to get my copy!

Does the number we get depend on when we pre-ordered it, or is it random which number you get?
Comment by Guybrush Threepwood April 30, 2008, 8:53 am
The number depends on how much TTG loves you, and how much you love TTG.

We can't control exactly what order the numbers will go out, but people who preordered will get lower numbers than people who don't buy until after the book is available.

Can't wait. :)
I hope I get a low number. :P

Are all copies "200/2500"? :D
(thus: like it's actually printed on the cover, hehehehe!)
Comment by barchetta April 30, 2008, 2:18 pm
Nope. They were individually numbered by Steve himself.
Comment by Emily April 30, 2008, 4:52 pm
Which number did I get? 2,499?
Comment by Yit April 30, 2008, 6:26 pm
i wanted oa limited edition of 100 so I could sell mine on ebay in 10 years for $10, 000 !
Comment by hero1 April 30, 2008, 9:36 pm
we wanted people to actually be able to own the book (and to actually have some available to buy at comic con and pax), while still keeping the print run relatively small one time thing.

as long as you don't print any more I'm happy. These sam & max collectibles are adding up.. office prints, sketchbooks soon-to-be action figures :)
Comment by Hero1 May 1, 2008, 2:58 pm
I hope I get #4 or 14, personal reasoning, but then again I'll be happy with whatever number I get XD.

And action figures? I want one or a set or....! O.O

Finally something. I pre-ordered forever ago and this has been holding up my shirt and hat shipping as well. =( ...and it's still going to be a couple more weeks.
Comment by BloodShed May 1, 2008, 8:44 pm
We'll be printing a second, more-limited "jack Hero1's ebay prospects" edition right after we run out of these. There will only be ten printed, bound in roadkill, and they'll be signed by Steve Purcell, in blood, with his teeth.
Comment by Jake May 1, 2008, 9:45 pm
I'll take 2
Comment by xChri5x May 1, 2008, 10:58 pm
I'd like a significant part of Purcells right hand to come with the hardcover, so I can be sure he won't sign another edition again.
Comment by Dingding May 2, 2008, 4:26 am
Finally! I've ordered mine shortly after it was avalable for purchase. I hope I'll be getting a nice plate number. Like from first twenty maybe? Please? Pretty please? For me? You always mail me and tell me how special I am and how you like me best, after I've purchased things. Prove it!
Comment by Morden May 2, 2008, 8:30 am
On second thought, I can settle for a nice number like 100 or even 1000. Heck, getting the 2500 is just as cool as getting the number one. So please Telltale. Write it down, remember it, and when you're sending my copy, make sure I get a nice number. Thanks. You're the best.
Comment by Morden May 2, 2008, 8:44 am
I pre-ordered this thing months ago! Can't wait to get it in my hands. Hell, I might buy a second one for posterity!
Comment by pennstat May 2, 2008, 4:27 pm
damn you Jake hahaha
Comment by Hero1 May 3, 2008, 5:40 am
We haven't had an update in a month. How are things proceeding?
Comment by SenileCoot May 25, 2008, 1:37 pm
Apologies for asking about the total number in another thread, I should have digged a little further! :-)

BTW, wasn't there a joke by Jerry Seinfeld about "limited editions": "Yeah, it's limited to the number they can *sell*..." :-b
Comment by Marcel Feenstra June 5, 2008, 1:28 am
*whines* Where's my book? I ordered the hardcover edition in February. It was supposed to ship during the spring. Oh well ... I'll wait. But you better get me a nice number. Hehe
